1. DESCRIPTION AND APPLICATIONS
Aluminium is a lightweight silvery-white metal that is soft, ductile and malleable. It is one of the three most abundant elements on earth, in the form of different chemical compounds in clays, granites, feldspars, etc. Bauxite is a mineral from which alumina is extracted. The alumina then undergoes an electrolytic process to obtain aluminium. Exposure to air means that an oxide coating forms on the surface, protecting it from subsequent corrosion.

There are many applications for aluminium drawn-wire, which can be basically divided into electrical and mechanical applications. Within the electrical applications, it is used for high voltage lines, cable harnesses, enamelled wire. Mechanical applications are very diverse depending on the alloy. Amongst these applications we could highlight its use for rivets, staples, welding, metal spraying, etc. Aluminium made into different sized ingots is totally used for deoxidising steel .

2. CHEMICAL CHARACTERISTICS
Aluminium is an amphoteric metal that reacts with acids and strong bases to give off hydrogen. It is insoluble in water and in normal organic solvents. It oxidises easily, but the oxide coating formed on the surface protects it from any further oxidation, unless the metal is finally divided (powder or flakes) in which case there may be total oxidation, giving off a lot heat and with ignition. Reactions with acids and bases are always exothermic. It forms alloys with a number of very popular industrial metals. With the bases the corresponding aluminate is generated. It reacts violently with oxides and metallic salts as well as with mercury and its compounds. Many of the products from these reactions are sensitive to mechanical knocks and bumps.
